Reflection: I learned a lot about collaboration and team work in this introductory course to web development, as well as how to plan and design a website! The students in this course included students with various experiences in web development, ranging from no experience to those with extensive experience. This was a very challenging course for me as I had no experience with web development, but with a lot of determination and effort plus the help and encouragement of my instructors and colleagues I was able to complete the course with success. The course challenged me more than any other class I believe I have ever taken. In this course we had to learn how to write XHTML, EXtensible HyperText Markup Language, for the purpose of creating a personal website that would pass a validation test. For me, this was like learning a foreign language and then creating a formal written paper in the foreign language as an assessment all in less than two months. Most of the time, this process led to trouble shooting skills. If the site did not pass validation, then the language had to be carefully examined to find the reason(s) for not passing validation and then the errors had to be corrected so it would pass the validation test. This required patience and sometimes support from classmates to figure out. As I was taking this course, I wondered how the course would ever benefit me in the area of education. After completing the course, I can now see some benefits for learning the programming language. In working on my teacher website hosted by School in Sites, I now have an understanding of the "code" that I sometimes see in maintaining my class website. In creating this portfolio using Weebly, a website builder, I have found it necessary to read the code to check uniformity in the font sizes, making sure my fonts are equal in size from page to page within my portfolio. But the most valuable lesson I learned from this class is to ask questions and appreciate the support, knowledge, and constructive feedback of others. Artifacts: Hand Coded Website |
